Many visitors wonder if they can explore Nusa Penida on a scooter. It is possible, but the roads are not like in the south of Bali.
The short answer
- Many roads are narrow and steep, and some parts are rough.
- A scooter suits experienced riders only.
- A car with driver is the easier and safer choice for most visitors and for groups.
1. What the roads are like
The main roads are improving, but many are narrow, with steep hills, sharp bends and rough sections close to the viewpoints. Trucks and cars share the same small roads, and distances take longer than the map suggests.
2. Riding a scooter
- Only ride if you are already confident on a scooter.
- In Indonesia you need a licence that covers motorbikes, such as an International Driving Permit with the motorcycle category.
- Always wear a helmet, and check that your travel insurance covers scooter riding.
- Avoid riding in the rain or after dark.
3. A car with driver
With a car and driver you can rest between stops, and your driver knows the roads and the best times at each viewpoint. One car takes up to 6 guests.
